Facebook in particular has spent a whopping $22 billion-plus on disclosed acquisitions since its inception in 2004. WhatsApp, Instagram and 45 other companies are now under Facebook's belt. It didn't take Mark Zuckerberg very long to realize buying other companies is the best way to grow his own.

WhatsApp's CEO Is Not Very Happy With Apple Right Now

At least one tech founder wasn't all that impressed by what he heard during Apple's annual developers conference on Monday. Jan Koum, the cofounder and CEO of WhatsApp, took a jab at Apple for unveiling some new features to iMessage that seem similar to those offered on his mobile messaging app.

He didn't spell out which particular updates he was referring to, but Apple unveiled the option to insert audio, video and location information into conversations, all of which are already features you can find on WhatsApp.

Koum did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Apple has been called out in the past for "borrowing" software features from big and small companies. It appears that tradition will continue this year.

During the presentation, Apple showed that these message attachments would "self-destruct" unless the user chooses otherwise. This was billed as helping users save space on their phones, but it some have already claimed may be a threat to apps like Snapchat, which are built on that feature.

Snapchat had a more diplomatic response to this than Koum, however.

"It's exciting to see other companies begin to embrace deletion by default," a rep for Snapchat said in an emailed response to Mashable.

Messaging services weren't the only ones who noticed some familiar features from Apple on Monday. Apple also unveiled iCloud Drive, a file storage system similar to Dropbox and Box. On top of that, Apple announced better photo storage capabilities, perhaps undercutting Carousel, the photo organization app released by Dropbox earlier this year.

When asked for comment, a rep for Dropbox said the company has "nothing to share at this time." Box's CEO, on the other hand, praised Apple on Twitter for allowing iCloud to synchronize content across platforms.

WhatsApp Cofounder on Facebook: We're Not Getting 'Swallowed By the Borg'

Brian Acton still hasn't fully come to terms with the idea of his new life as a a billionaire and Facebook employee.

Acton, one of the two cofounders of WhatsApp, opened up about his personal feelings on the pending Facebook acquisition in his first speaking engagement ever at StartX, a startup incubator affiliated with Stanford University, on Wednesday night.

"More than anything, you are somewhat numb," Acton said of the negotiation process with Facebook. "You are dumbstruck as to what's going on. You have this flotilla of lawyers around you. And it was a lot of lawyers, I'll tell you that. Ninety-six hours of being in conference rooms with lawyers non-stop."

He continued: "By the end of it you're just numb. You're just trying to sort of grasp it all, and I don't think I really do grasp it all just yet. I think that it will hit me in stages. It's going to change my life, I know that.

I'm looking forward to it, but it also with some apprehension. I'm looking forward to it, but it also with some apprehension."

Acton still has some time to try and grasp the situation. Facebook agreed to acquire for $19 billion in February. The deal was approved by the Federal Trade Commission in the U.S., but Facebook has reportedly asked the European Union to review the deal.

During the wide-ranging hour-long interview, Acton explained why the WhatsApp team refrained from doing press (it's all about "focus," he says, the real "F-word" at the company), his thoughts on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg ("He's done far more with his company than I ever will ... I don't know when this guy sleeps") and why WhatsApp opted to sell rather than pursue a public offering one day.

"I think we hit a point in our lifetime of the company when we were either going to be acquired or have to go public," Acton said. "There's far more pain in going public. And Mark, by the way, already did it. So kudos to the guy for doing it. He had the energy to do it, he had the stamina do it. I don't know if I personally had that stamina."

Talks between WhatsApp and Facebook "got real real" in early February, according to Acton, when Zuckerberg "put a number in front of us."

To those who worry that WhatsApp might now give over its data on users to Facebook, Acton had a simple response: there really isn't much data to give.

"It's not like we're going to, on day one, send all this data over to Facebook," "It's not like we're going to, on day one, send all this data over to Facebook," he said. "And by the way, we don't have any data. People don't really understand this, but we don't have much beyond a phone number to work with."

Ultimately, he stressed that Facebook and WhatsApp had agreed to a "model of independence," which will allow WhatsApp to continue business as usual, just with more resources as its disposal. Or, as Acton put it in what was probably the most colorful moment in the interview, "We don't necessarily look at it from the perspective that we're going to get swallowed by the Borg."

WhatsApp Now Has 600 Million Monthly Active Users

Facebook's investment in WhatsApp is looking more and more promising.

WhatsApp now has more than 600 million monthly active users, according to a tweet from CEO and cofounder Jan Koum late Sunday night. That's up from the roughly 450 million it had in February when Facebook first announced plans to acquire the messaging service for $16 billion with another $3 billion in restricted stock units for employees kicked in for good measure.

WhatsApp previously announced hitting the 500 million active user mark in April, meaning it has added 100 million active users in just four months.

Facebook CEO and cofounder Mark Zuckerberg alluded to the staggering growth rate in the original announcement of the acquisition, leading some to conclude that WhatsApp may be on pace to hit the 1 billion user mark more quickly than Facebook did.

With 600 million users, WhatsApp continues to be significantly ahead of its competitors in the fast-growing messaging app space. Free messaging and calling app WeChat revealed earlier this month that it had 438 million active users, and analysts estimated last month that Line had around 235 million active users.

The WhatsApp acquisition received regulatory approval in the U.S., but it is still being reviewed in Europe. In its most recent earnings call, Facebook's execs reiterated that they expect the deal to close later this year.

A Hindi WhatsApp message doing the rounds of a group called 'Meem to Meem' (Meem means Muslim) cautions Muslim girls about recharging their mobile phones. They should either get the recharge done at Muslim-owned shops, or buy coupons and do it themselves.

Any method in which a Hindu shop owner writes down the phone number is fraught with danger, the message says. That's because the shop owner passes on their number to the RSS, which then starts 'operation seduction'. The girl ends up converting and marrying a Hindu, who divorces her after few months. Spurned by her parents, she has no option then but to follow the RSS diktat and help ensnare other Muslim girls.

Aam Aadmi Party member Zafar Ali Shaikh, administrator of the WhatsApp group, told Mumbai Mirror he has no idea who sent the message. He said he started the group during Ramzan to share religious sayings. "If such messages are posted, I will have to delete the group," Shaikh said.

The message, however, is only one manifestation of an existing fear in the community. This reporter was told last week about 'Smartfriends', a group allegedly set up to ensnare Muslim girls. In 2009, a question about 'SmartFriends' was asked on 'Yahoo answers. com', and last year a blogpost described it as an RSS group comprising Hindus trained in seducing Muslim girls. However, the only activity seen on the group's Facebook page was in 2010, when its profile picture — a saffron flag — was uploaded.

Surendra Sharma, karyalay pramukh of RSS in Mumbai, told Mirror no such group was set up by the Sangh.

On the flip side is a WhatsApp message that emerged from a group called `Yoddha Shetkari', set up by Aurangabad farmer leader Jayajirao Suryavanshi to exchange news about their problems. But the message now being circulated has little to do with farmers. It describes a discussion among friends about love jihad, in which one girl was unconvinced. The group then proceeded to convince her through a series of arguments against marrying Muslims that ranged from four wives, burqa, slaughtering one animal a day for food, producing children every year, not being allowed to work, etc.

Like Shaikh, Suryavanshi denied knowledge of the message. "I've been involved in people's movements led by Medha Patkar and Baba Adhav. I don't believe in communal and caste differences," he said. "I also condemn this love jihad theory."

Suryavanshi said any of the 30 group members may have Hindutva connections and might have posted the message. Like Shaikh, he too felt he would have to close down the group if it was being misused.

However, human rights activist Shakeel Ahmed, who received the two messages on his WhatsApp account, said he felt "sickened" by both. "This is just a way by the men of both communities to restrict women. Inter-religious marriages should be encouraged with no conversion on either side."
